Hello! My name is Kati, and I am a middle school math teacher. I have taught 7th and 8th grade mathematics for 3 years in Utah. Prior to that I substitute taught for 1 year. I graduated from Grand Valley State University in Michigan with a degree in secondary math education and music education.

In the classroom, I run a structured, student-centered classroom that promotes positive learning experiences for all students. I have high expectations for every student, and I firmly believe that every student is capable of succeeding in math to the highest level. Not only is math used everywhere and everyday, but also math is a tool we use to learn how to communicate, collaborate, think critically, and problem solve. I hope that students can learn these skills in an enjoyable, memorable way!

My approach goes beyond rote memorization of formulas and following rigid steps. Instead, I aim to guide students to independently tackle problems and guide group discussions to highlight successful strategies. As a facilitator in my students’ learning, I actively engage students in mathematics through the integration of technology and real-world applications while maintaining high expectations for every student.

I am going to be intentional about reaching that goal, I am going to blog about my practices. I want to give myself a space where I can reflect about what worked or didn't work in my classroom. I want to force myself to think about why these things worked or didn't. I want to give myself a space where I can explore new ideas and actually put them to the test rather than screenshotting them and allowing them to be forgotten. That is what I aim to do with this blog, and I would like to invite you along for the ride!

In short, I want to be more intentional about my teaching practices and give myself a space to reflect.
